Common Causes of Bad Breath and Some Natural Treatments

As a doctor, I go ahead and tell the client that they have bad breath and that it will clear if they do the work. I tell them that it will be used as an indicator of health as we go along. I feel it is part of my job as their health care practitioner. As a spouse, friend, relative or person on the street, a bit of tact is involved in telling someone they have bad breath.

Sick bleeding gums?Pack White Oak Bark powder (not tincture!) around the gums every night for 30 days. Also increase the amount of Vitamin C in the diet.

Rotten Teeth? This really stinks. It can also be associated with sinus problems. One key in diagnosing this is to ask if they have post nasal drip. Solution: Go to the dentist on a regular basis and get that work done. Floss your teeth and smell the floss. If it is the same smell as the bad breath, see your dentist.

Gastric Reflux?Smells kind of sour. Eating for your blood type should help and reviewing Fit for Life?s proper food combining techniques should also help. Fasting can also be good for this.

Kidney Disease?Smells like a dying animal. Uric acid is building up in the body. Appetite will be poor. Processing of proteins is not happening. After a few months, dead cell toxins affect the eating center of the brain and tell it not to eat, because nausea will occur. The tongue is often gray and pasty. It?s important to see a doctor or naturopath with this as it could be life-threatening.

Yeast? This smells sweetish, but stale. The tongue will usually be coated with a sticky white coat and sometimes ?crusties? will build up on the corners of the mouth. If the body is infected with yeast, there will also be a bad body odor and stinky feet. There are lots of products out there that will work if you keep searching. Try some Tom?s Natural Toothpaste with Myrrh in it for your teeth and take about 2 Myrrh Gum capsules every day for a couple of months for the systemic infection. Add lots of oregano to your cooking (they actually make Oregano tablets for yeast infections.) Brush or scrape your tongue as well as your teeth, and think about doing a water-only fast for 3-5 days.

Ketones?A byproduct of fat breakdown caused from starvation, dieting or diabetes. Is there an increase in thirst? Do you experience light-headedness, fainting, hypoglycemia, or brain fog? Do you forget to eat or skip meals? If so, you might want to have your blood sugar checked.

Side effects of some foods? It could be that supplement or herb you are taking is causing the halitosis, or some ingredient in a meal like garlic. You can pretty much tell when it?s garlic.

Dog/Puppy or Cat/Kitten Bad Breath? My pathology teacher used to tell us, ?Cells are cells. They all act alike.? Treating bad breath in pets is much the same as treating bad breath in humans. One thing I?ve noticed though is that pets get sores on their tongue from Chlamydia or herpes infections more often than humans do. When this happens, the tongue can erode. When this happens, you will see lots of saliva, the pet tries to eat, but can?t, and they start to lose weight. Open their mouth, and check for sores. If it smells like rotten tissue and you see those tell-tale red sores, see your local vet. Feed liquid diets for a while until they recoup and their tongue heals.

If the teeth are red at the gum line, it could be a tooth coming in (pets will be less than 8 months of age) or maybe the teeth need cleaning (you will see lots of tarter built up around the back molars, on the canine teeth, or behind the front teeth.)

Don?t confuse these types of halitosis with the smell of healthy puppy and kitten breath which naturally goes away when the gut flora is established.

With all halitosis, it?s important to determine the cause of the bad breath and rectify it. Halitosis is a symptom of something not working right in the body (except when you eat garlic.) Healthy breath is part of a healthy body. These things can be corrected. Covering up the symptom with mouthwash or mints is only a temporary fix to a deeper problem.

Testosterone and Prostate Cancer

Everyone should know that when testosterone is metabolized, it produces DHT as one of the by-products, which is what allows your muscles and erections to grow. That is a good thing! However, DHT that doesn't get burned up during sex or working out is also what is at the root of your prostate problems to begin with.

The fact of the matter is that DHT is always being produced, and a lot of us simply cannot burn it off fast enough--no matter how much we work out in the gym or how much sex we have.

In the case of prostate problems, one camp blames a lack of testosterone while the other camp blames too much of it. I have even heard of a doctor suggesting castration as a means of preventing the spread of prostate cancer because he believed it was the only way to prevent testosterone from acting as fuel for the cancer.

Talk about a case of throwing away both the baby and the bathwater!

I'm sure that we've all heard at some point or another the notion that more sex is the solution to prostate problems, citing as evidence the high incidence of prostate cancer in celibate priests. Let's think about this for a moment: If more sex was really the solution, how come a certain rock-star died from prostate cancer? Also, if prostate cancer is the number one cancer killer of males, were all these murdered males celibate? Not likely...

While plain common sense would indicate that utter sexual abstinence may be harmful over the course of a lifetime, prostate cancer remains the number one cancer-killer of males DESPITE the fact that very few males are either rock stars or priests!

So, prostate cancer has little to do with sexual activity or the testosterone that fuels it. Rather, it is an issue of how we handle the excessive DHT in our bodies. With today's meat and hormone-filled diets it should be no wonder that our current report card is so poor.

This is why pro-hormone supplementation is replete with warnings that people with prostate problems should not be taking their products. (Bodybuilders love excess DHT which they can direct into their muscle tissue.)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, often referred to as simply BPH, is an enlargement of the prostate gland that usually occurs in men who are over the age of 50. This enlargement in the prostate gland can cause a gradual squeezing of the urethra, which makes urinating difficult and painful. Many men who experience this prostate problem do not have any symptoms at all and it may not be detected until an annual rectal exam. Men with this prostate problem who do experience symptoms are likely to notice difficulty in starting urination, frequent urination as well as an increased frequency in awakening at night to urinate.

Prostate cancer, another prostate problem, is perhaps the most severe and is one of the leading types of cancers diagnosed in American men. Each year almost a quarter of a million new cases are diagnosed. It is estimated that prostate cancer will affect one out of every ten men. Each year more than 30,000 men die from prostate cancer. Because of the seriousness of this prostate problem, prostate cancer is perhaps the most serious of all the different types of prostate disease. Prostate cancer generally occurs in men who are over the age of 65, although cases in younger men have been reported. There is a high incidence of prostate cancer occurring in men who are shown to have a family history of this type of prostate disease. African-American men are considered to be particularly at risk for prostate cancer and suffer from the highest death rates related to this disease.

Realistic Expectations for Chair Yoga Students

Firstly, let me make it clear that Yoga is not a ?cure? for the huge variety of ailments that afflict mankind, but it can help in every area of life. Yoga?s strength lies in preventative medicine, living a healthy life style, and making any current ailments, more tolerable.

So, the first thing you will gain from a Chair Yoga class is knowledge. The concepts of good health, longevity, and making the most of your life right now, are powerful tools taught in every style of Yoga.

However, Chair Yoga has been developed from many gentle styles of Hatha Yoga, for those of us who are not so steady on their feet, and those who cannot get out of a wheel chair. Many students of Chair yoga remark that they learn so much from each class.

Nutritional information is sometimes discussed in class. The Yogic diet is environmentally safe, humane, will keep us all around for a while longer, and in good health.

The postures and low-impact movements lubricate the connective tissue, with reduced friction occurring in the joints. This is great news for ?weak links? within the human body, such as: Knees, hips, spine, shoulders, and more parts that wear out sooner than we would like.

Toning the body is a result of the stretching and flexing of muscles that naturally occur in a Chair Yoga class. This also releases tension, throughout your body, and triggers endorphins. As a result, students have a feeling of euphoria during and after a Chair Yoga class.

Massaging the internal organs is a result of bending and twisting movements that are a trademark of any Hatha Yoga class. You can expect your digestion and elimination to be improved in a very short time.

Proper posture is result of focusing on it at all times. Yoga teachers constantly correct spinal alignment that needs a little help. Many will verbal cue you without a physical adjustment, but some teachers are more ?hands on.? You will notice your posture change, for the better, right away and your spine will thank you for it.

Proper breathing helps us deal with stress and oxygenates the blood faster than the more common ?shallow breath.? In many cases deeper breathing will improve high blood pressure. This is not a guarantee, but deeper breathing has a calming effect on the mind and body.

Lastly, the many benefits of learning to relax or meditate are so plentiful that books have been written on the subject. A calm mind leads to a calm body and Yoga will allow you to make friends with your body again.

So, if you have a multitude of good expectations about taking a Chair Yoga class, you won?t be disappointed.

Asthma In Children Can Be Boosted By Genetic Reasons

The lack of air and shortness of breath an asthma sufferer feels must be one of the worst experiences someone can experiment as oxygen is our vital lifeline that keeps the body functioning and in good shape. The lack of this vital gas affects the brain in just a few minutes and a continuos lack of oxygen can cause irreversible damage in the brain after just five minutes. An asthma attack can be compared to living on the edge, with just the minimum oxygen needed to survive.

Unfortunately many asthma sufferers are children, as they are more sensible to environment hazards than adults are and they often develop asthma easily. One of these environmental hazards that can influence the development of asthma attacks by children is the presence of tobacco smoke.

Recently there have been studies made indicating that genetic defects can increase a child?s risk of developing asthma from second-hand smoke. The defects discovered in these studies involve an enzyme called glutathione S transferase (GST), this is a molecule which is known to help to detoxify the effects of passive smoking on the air passages of people. And is this GST deficiency that may add to the adverse health effects caused by passive and active smoking.

In a study made to more than 3,000 German children it was found that those with this defect whose parents were smokers were five times more likely to suffer from asthma and wheezing and had an even higher risk of shortness of breath than youngsters whose parents didn?t smoke. It has also been found that another fault with GST can be linked with reduced lung function in children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. Which is one more reason for pregnant women not to smoke while they are carrying their unborn babies. Clear evidence exists that smoking during pregnancy affects the growth of the fetus and the maturation of the fetal lung, resulting in impairment of lung function in the newborn.

The Battle Against Aging Skin

In our youth conscious society, aging skin has been shown the front line. Your skin, being your epidermis, is the part of you that people see, and gives an accurate picture of your overall state of health and age. If you are at all worried about your appearance, then taking good care of your skin is absolutely vital.

The best way to combat the ravages of aging skin care is to begin when you are young. The negative effects of age on skin don't just happen overnight. It actually begins occurring right after you?re born. Technically, you could even make the argument that your skin starts to ?age? at the moment of conception. In many cases aging seems to occur rapidly when we reach certain ages, but the reality is that the visible effects of aging skin are the result of a process that has been occurring for as long as you?ve lived.

So far as aging skin care goes, the sooner you act the better. What causes skin to age can be attributed to several different things, but the major overriding cause of aging skin comes down to damage done to the elastic proteins. The elastic proteins at the active agents that keep your skin tight. The culprit because the damage are known as free radicals.

What the heck are free radicals you ask? A free radical is just a technical term for an oxygen compound that is no longer beneficial, but to the contrary, could cause harm. It actually doesn?t always have to be oxygen, but because of our atmosphere it almost always is. An oxygen molecule that has been split is highly reactive and very corrosive to pretty much anything and everything it happens to come in contact with, including the proteins in your skin.

Since oxygen is everywhere, there's really no way to avoid its damaging effects. However, you can lower the amount of free radicals that occur in your skin by doing several things. UV radiation is a major source of free radicals, as it is just the right wavelength to split oxygen molecules, so staying out of the sun is an excellent way to employ aging skin care.

A limited amount of sunlight everyday is fine, and actually good for you because you obtain the central vitamins from its, but its never a good idea to take in the sun if you?re worried about aging skin care. Even if you're using sunscreen, some UV rays are going to penetrate and do damage to your skin over the long haul.

Another way of pulling aging skin care is to abstain from tobacco and alcohol products. Smoking anything, especially tobacco, is the perfect way for your body to ingest free radicals, exactly what you do not want to happen and too much drinking will have the same affect.

The best ways I know for aging skin care are to be on the defensive, as these are without question the most effective ways to keep younger looking skin. Once wrinkles to occur, the only way to get rid of them is cosmetic surgery, and aging skin care products will become nothing more than just different ways of concealing the lines and wrinkles.

Want to Become a Better Athlete Train Explosive

Almost every person that goes to the gym thinks that they are athletic, this is just not the case.

Going to the gym running on a treadmill does not equal total fitness neither does having a big bench press.

So many people are under the impression that the gym will make the total athlete. WRONG!

The way you become the total athlete is to train to be an athlete, want to be strong train with heavy resistance.

If a sprinter trains for long distance his speed will not improve, he has to work sprints.

So many people train to slow, thinking slower is better. In some case this may be true, however if you train slow you will become slow, if you want to be fast train for speed, want to become explosive train explosive.

Every sport has some kind of explosive movement whether you sprinting in football, swing a baseball bat, jumping on the basketball court all require explosive training.

Almost all movements done on a daily basis are some kind of explosive movement.

People don't bend over slow for a 10 count, they bend fast, and usually will hurt their back from this simple movement.

Bodyweight training is all you need to become physically fit in record time.

Bodyweight training works the body from different angles and will work the whole body in less time.

So before you train slow all the time, think do you want to be slow or fast?

Tips For Choosing Man Skin Care Products

Nowadays, men are increasingly taking care of their skin. We have come to realize this is not just about looking good, it?s primarily about health. But realizing this, is just the first step, then the second step becomes a little bit harder. It?s then, when ask the question: What man skin care products should I use?

First you should start getting to know your skin. Man skin care products are special depending on the type of skin you have. Look at shaving creams and face cleaning soaps for example, they have certain types: for sensitive skin, for dry skin, oily skin. Determine which skin type you have, and work from there.

Other thing you need to keep in mind is your main goal with a product. Man skin care products exist for a variety of applications, from anti-aging creams to pore cleaning products. But remember also that you should take care of all your skin as well. A younger face means not only less wrinkles but an overall healthy look.

I would also recommend to always prefer natural man skin care products. The reason? Just as the name says, it?s natural. You?ll be amazed of the quality of natural products for the skin available for men since ancient ages. Some man skin care products have us so blinded by claims of miracle chemical ingredients, that we often forget the simplicity of natural skin care.

The man skin care product market is just beginning, now that more and more men want these kind of products you?ll see new offers pop up. Don?t get caught on nice packaging and miracle claims, always stick to the facts because is your health what we are talking about here. Finally, remember great man skin care products make you feel great. Listen to your body and you can?t go wrong.

Training thru Injuries

You're hurt? You can't find a magic bullet cure? The one who loves you most says, give it a rest, but nooooo, I am an athlete, I'll get better on my own.

If that sounds like you, you may need more help than anyone can give, but I'll do my best. First of all, 2-3 days rest will not impair your conditioning; in fact you're probably run down from over-training anyway, so give yourself at least that much.

In all likelihood, you will eventually get better; nature is so kind that in spite of ourselves we will heal. But repetitive use of every step (walking or running) is antagonistic to the healing process, and depending on the type and severity of injury, that repetitive stress can lead to more critical injury e.g. a stress fracture or at the very least slow down your healing process even to the point of disabling you so that you are forced to heal.

To maintain a training regimen following an injury:

  • Continue daily stretching.
  • Cross train--it is the single best thing you can do.
  • Massage and heat the area daily. There are some topical anti-inflammatory and deep heat creams, (apply ice only when the injury is fresh).
  • If you feel you must run, keep it to 25%-33% of normal or run in a swimming pool (this happens to be an excellent training adjunct, even if you?re not injured)
  • Elliptical trainers or ?Versaclimber? are excellent.
  • Maintain upper body strength (you should have upper body strength to run too).

Remember, your pain is a pronation injury secondary to arch movement, so at the very least, get a good over-the-counter support to use as much as possible. Most of them are good; as with anything, some are better suited for you, so trial and error may be necessary. I like Soft Sole, Superfeet and my personal favorite is a Spenco length orthotic.

Use some kind of anti-inflammatory in the evening (not before you run, if your body wants to warn you of something, don't mask it).

AND once you feel better, do not just start in full blast again. Give yourself another 1-2 weeks before going back to 100% pre-injury. Injury and inflammation are like boiling water, it doesn't take as long to bring water back to a boil if it's still warm.

How To Get A Face Lift Without Surgery

You may have heard about the natural face lift. This process is one that is often considered to be a good option in the way of avoiding a standard, surgical face lift. There are several products on the market that claim that they can provide a face lift without surgery. They work in a very unique way and have helped many people to have natural, healthy looking young skin. If you are considering a face lift, think about the natural face lift first.

How Does It Work?

Face lift creams are used to provide your skin with a healthier look. Often, this will happen through a process and it may take several treatments to actually see the improvements to your skin. To understand how you will benefit from natural face lift products, consider this process. The skin forms wrinkles, which is what a face lift helps to remove. The creams that are used in this method will help to restore the look of the face is quite a simple way.

They will cause the first layer of your skin to be removed. When this happens, it forces new skin to grow in that area. The new skin is tighter, firmer and the wrinkles are lessened in their depth as well as in their ability to be seen. Face lift cream products do work and this method does make good sense. Yet, you should spend some time at least looking at how the natural face lift does work for you.

Comparing A Face Lift Without Surgery

When it all comes down to it, you need to carefully consider face lift creams versus the standard, surgical face lift. In comparison to results, it is unlikely that a natural face lift using creams will be as drastic a change as that of a surgical one. In this case, it is likely that the face will have a more instant benefit whereas the face lift with creams will take a longer time to actually happen.

On the other hand, though, the subtle benefits of a natural face lift are very much there. Additionally, it costs quite a bit less than having surgery. On top of these things, the natural face lift is not going to put your life in danger as any type of face lift can do. Surgery is a drastic change whereas the face lift without surgery through the use of a face lift cream is anything but that.

With so many things to consider, it is obvious that there are benefits to the natural face lift that you can get from face lift cream. Although it seems to be something that is much more simplistic, and it does take time for it to work, the natural face lift does provide several important qualifications to the user.

How To Make Life Easier For All Who Suffer From Breast Cancer

I am personally aware of how hard it was to see, Ann, one of my daughters, struggle with the pain of the treatments for her breast cancer. After many long months in the hospital, Ann, in 1995, was relieved of all of her pain as she left us and went to be with the Lord. Her parents, her husband her brothers and sisters, her two children, her friends, her many young autistic students - - all of us, still miss Ann very much.

But, today, because of the many improvements in breast cancer prevention and care, thousands of lives are being both helped and saved worldwide, every year. In this way, other families are spared the heartache our family has experienced with our loss of Ann. But, much more research needs to be done and research, as you know, costs lots of money.

If you know anyone with breast cancer, you have first hand knowledge of the pain, the upset and the struggle that must be endured with today's ways of treating this kind of cancer.

Back in '95 I'd have given anything and paid any price to simply reduce Ann's agonizing pain. One of the aims of breast cancer research is to find better ways to diagnose and treat those with breast cancer. So far, there is no sure cure, but there are lots of newly discovered and less painful treatments available. These have been discovered by intensive research and then put into practice. In this way the suffering of breast cancer patients is much less in many ways.

Ann?s husband has this to say about his wife:

?Ann was diagnosed via a mammogram in October 1993 shortly after we got home from our year in Israel. By the time she was diagnosed her cancer was stage 4 metastasis and had spread to her hips and liver. She had a mastectomy and then radiation and chemotherapy. In June of 1994 she had massive chemo with stem cell transplant at the University of Pennsylvania. In fact, she had her stem cell infusion on July 5. I well remember how we watched the July 4th fireworks from a hospital room overlooking the Delaware River. She seemed to do a bit better for a while after that.

In June of 1995 I was invited to a conference in Cambridge England. Ann went with me and we spent some time in London. We took a wheelchair with us because she could not walk for any long period of time. By the end of the trip she was not feeling well and when we got home we immediately called her oncologist. She entered the hospital the next day. The cancer had reinvigorated and had spread pretty widely. She was in St. Luke's until she died in August. There are a lot of things that she endured. I had to give her injections every day for almost a month before her stem cell procedure. I don't remember how many major and minor surgeries? mastectomy, catheter placement, catheter removal, etc. She spent over three months in the hospital during her treatment. She endured it all with grace and courage. She mostly worried about the kids and me. She was a remarkable person and I miss her very much.?

Before her marriage Ann, who was 43, had been an excellent, and dedicated teacher of autistic children. Those who worked with Ann and the children were often filled with astonishment and praise for the way Ann so lovingly cared for ?her kids.? She treated each one as a special person and did her very best to comfort, teach and help them in every way.

Even after her marriage, she and her husband often invited the children to spend a weekend with them in their home. In this way Ann tried to help the children?s parents so they could have a couple of day?s relief from the constant care that autistic children always require.

So, if you would like to donate some of your money toward breast cancer research, here is an easy way to do it: order one or more of my useful, comfortable and very special PINK SLEEP MASKS. I guarantee and promise you that 25% of the money you send for this special sleep mask will be given directly to one or more of the Breast Cancer Research Foundations for you and we all thank you for your help.

Cold or Flu Remedy Drink Ingredients and Why They are Effective

Remember the days when you were young and had a terrible cold, that cup of wonderfully hot, spicy and soothing drink that Grandma gave you? We are going to reveal the common ingredients and why they work.

Ginger has been used by the Chinese for more than 2,000 years and is one of natures? amazing antiviral herbs. It is generally used to treat an upset stomach, but it also helps to fight colds by removing congestion, relieving sinus pain and clearing sore throats. As the Chinese says, take a nice hot ginger drink to induce sweating and eliminate the ?coldness? inside your body!

Honey We?ve all heard how good honey is haven?t we? Although not sure why, modern research has shown that honey has the following healing properties:

  • blocks the growth of oral bacteria
  • coats the throat and reduces throat irritation
  • effective when used in the treatment of gastric or peptic stomach ulcers
  • effective in the treatment of various wounds and infections
  • effective antioxidant, which allows the blood to circulate better and provide more oxygen to areas of the body such as the brain
  • can be applied externally to promote healing when applied to wounds and burns
  • Last but not least - their sweet flavour is often crucial to cover up the otherwise bland/bitter taste of other herbs!
Brown Sugar has been used by Chinese as a substitute for honey to make herbal desserts. Brown sugar has a higher sucrose and fibre content than regular (white) sugar, and according to Chinese medicine, it is effective in blood circulation, ?warming? of the intestines, and elimination of ?coldness? from the body ? sounds ideal for tackling colds and flu!

Cinnamon has been used for centuries to fight infection, stop vomiting and relieve the feelings of nausea. The 12th-century German nun and herbalist Hildegard of Bingen even recommended it as ?the universal spice for sinuses? and a treatment for colds, flu, and ?inner decay and slime.? Of course, its sweet flavour doesn?t hurt at all!

Cloves are actually the dried buds of the clove tree. Used in China for more than two thousand years, Cloves are supposed to be an aphrodisiac. We do know that oil of Clove is a time-honored remedy for toothache. Clove oil is highly antiseptic and used to stop vomiting.

Garlic is the highly regarded herb in ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire ? legend has it that the Romans fed it to their soldiers before the battles! Garlic contains several antiviral compounds, including allicin, one of the most potent antibiotics in plants, thus making it an excellent boost to the immune system. Chives, scallions, onions and leeks have similar properties.

Echinacea (purple coneflower), used by the American Indians for centuries, is one of the top-selling herbs in North America. It is believed to help stimulate the production of white blood cells and makes your body stronger in fighting against cold or flu.

Lemon Balm promotes sweating and is ideal for those who suffer from cold sores throughout the winter. It also has relaxing properties if served as tea. Please note that those having an underactive thyroid should not use lemon balm on a regular basis.

St. John?s Wort is a valuable herb during the winter months, as well as exerting an anti-depressant and nerve relaxing effect it also works as an anti-viral. It is an ideal herb for overworked, stressed people with a tendency to feeling down in the dumps due to low light levels in the winter.

Ginseng is a valuable herb that helps the body cope with stress, strengthen the immune system thus helping to work against cold viruses. Please note that Ginseng is not suitable for use during acute infections.

Peppermint is a valuable herb used in the treatment of bronchitis, colds and flu. It reduces fevers by inducing sweating and cooling the body. It is also a painkiller for headaches and some migraines. It is a soothing decongestant and makes an effective inhalation for clearing blocked sinuses.

Yarrow has anti-inflammatory properties and promote sweating, great for fever, feverish colds and flu according to many herbalists. It is often taken in combination with elderflower and peppermint.

Citrus Fruits have the best source of vitamin C, which helps the body to fight against infection. A combination of citrus fruit will make a delicious and healthy drink.

Whisky is the traditional remedy for soothing sore throats. In fact, alcoholic drinks in general have antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties and a small amount is good for fighting colds and soar throats.

Stephanie writes a light-hearted daily blog on healthy, delicious and family-friendly beverages, together with nutritional value and fun facts on foods. Get the cold/flu remedy drink recipes and more at http://www.yourdailydrink.com

Nocturnal Enuresis: The Bedwetting Demon

For many parents, it is a source of frustration. For children, it can be a devastatingly humiliating experience - something far worse than any monsters hiding under their beds or in their closets. I am talking about Nocturnal Enuresis, or bedwetting. Some children continue to suffer from this condition when they should be enjoying sleepovers and slumber parties. Yet, for the child who suffers from Involuntary Bedwetting, the thought of sleeping over someone?s house is riddled with fear that his or her secret will be exposed.

The cause of Nocturnal Enuresis isn't exactly known, however studies have shown that the number of children who suffer with this condition is between 5-7 million. Nocturnal refers to nighttime, so Nocturnal Enuresis is bedwetting that occurs during the night. It is also classified as children who involuntarily wet the bed when they are well passed the years of potty training. The occurrence of Nocturnal Enuresis is more prevalent in boys than in girls.

Conditions that Point to the Existence of Nocturnal Enuresis

If your child wets the bed one time that doesn't necessarily indicate Nocturnal Enuresis. Here are some factors that doctors look at when diagnosing Nocturnal Enuresis.

First, the doctor will need to determine if the Nocturnal Enuresis or involuntary bedwetting is frequent and repetitive. If a child is having episodes of at least 2 times a week, for at least three weeks, then that points to Nocturnal Enuresis.

Doctors will also take down the medical history of the child. In diagnosing Nocturnal Enuresis, the process is conducted on the basis of ruling out other medical conditions to determine what may be the underlying cause. The medical history part of the diagnosis will be concerned with answers to questions regarding medications the child may be taking, urinary tract infections, bladder and spinal cord abnormalities, Diabetes, and certain Seizure related disorders. Another factor that the doctor will look at is if there is a family history of Nocturnal Enuresis.

Nocturnal Enuresis: Causes

These questions help determine the existence of Nocturnal Enuresis. Though the cause is more like a puzzle than a simple laboratory test, there are some definite signs that contribute to the cause of Nocturnal Enuresis. For example, childhood stress such as a death, divorce, or significant change can trigger Nocturnal Enuresis. Delayed or slowed growth and development may also cause Nocturnal Enuresis. If the bladder is too small, that will also contribute. Some children are just heavy sleepers and won't wake up. While some medications may cause a child to wet the bed, this however does not constitute Nocturnal Enuresis. Once the course of prescribed medications is finished, the bedwetting problem stops.

What can be done about Nocturnal Enuresis?

Over the centuries the number one step that parents took to prevent Nocturnal Enuresis was to punish the child. This has led to a great misconception over what Nocturnal Enuresis is and has left society with the view that it was bad behavior on the child?s part. Parental education is absolutely necessary to the treatment of this condition and imperative to the child's emotional well-being. The child is not purposely wetting the bed to anger the parents, and parents need to be informed of positive and helpful steps they can take to encourage their children with gentle guidance and kindness.

If the Nocturnal Enuresis is the result of a medical condition, then treatment may be started according to the remedy appropriate for the condition. For sound sleepers, the use of a bedwetting alarm may be the solution. The alarm will go off, and the child is essentially being trained to wake up and use the restroom. Your doctor will instruct you on the proper use of the bedwetting alarm. If the condition is caused by slow growth usually no specific treatment is necessary, once the child grows, the Nocturnal Enuresis should stop.

No matter what you think may be the cause of Nocturnal Enuresis; you should take your child to the family doctor to have the proper diagnosis and treatment.

What One Should Know About Allergies

Allergies affect approximately 60 million Americans, which means one in every five adults or children suffer from them, and are common in men as well as in women. Thirty-five million people have upper respiratory symptoms, which are allergic reactions to airborne pollen. Around 10 million Americans have allergies to cats and two million present severe reactions to various insect stings.

Food allergies are less common in the family of allergies. About one out of three people pretend to have a food allergy and only about three to eight percent of children younger than three years old, and only one percent of adults really have an allergic reactions to food.

Unfortunately, food allergies are blamed for close to 200 deaths every year. Scientists say that allergies have to do with genetics. If one parent has allergies, there are 33% chances that each child will suffer from a form of allergy. If both parents are allergic, it is very much possible (seven cases out of 10) that their children will be allergic, too. If we are to discuss about allergies, we should have in view the fact that allergies usually stay with adults, while children sometimes outgrow them.

An allergy is in fact the response of your body to something that it perceives as a threat. Your body fights the allergen in the same way it would fight a virus or a bacterial infection. We can take as an example the pollens of some plants that are small and light and can be taken away by the winds for miles. Ragweed pollen has been found 400 miles out at sea and two miles up in the atmosphere.

Learn How To Meditate From Animals

You can learn how to meditate from a book, but meditation is as much an art as a science, and arts especially are better taught by live teachers than by books. That is why meditation is often learned quicker and brought to a deeper level when the beginner has someone to model their practice on. Can that someone be a dog, cat or other animal?

Learn How To Meditate From Your Cat

Have you ever watched a cat clean itself? It is usually fully involved in the process, and if you watch, you can intuitively sense that the cat is living right in the moment. It isn't thinking about what it will do later, or something that happened this morning. Watch how a cat stretches out in the sun and relaxes.

This is the natural state of being in the now that meditators work towards. Of course animals are afraid, but they aren't afraid and thinking I shouldn't be afraid. They feel pain without the added suffering of contemplating the future of it. This being here now is what you see in the eyes of a deer. How can we more easily achieve this?

By using an animal as a model. This takes imagination, one of the strengths of the human brain, fortunately. Watch a cat, then sit and imagine you are a cat. You'll notice that your mind doesn't wander into thoughts of yesterday or tomorrow. It is more at rest, yet open to whatever the moment brings.

When you take a walk in the woods, pretend you are a deer. See the woods around you without thinking about them. Stop short of chewing on the plants, but be a deer for a while. You may notice that your senses are heightened. Can thinking too much lessen your ability to hear and see? It certainly can lessen your listening and looking.

Animal Meditations

The point isn't to think like an animal, though that can be entertaining and instructive too. The idea is to model the state of mind of an animal at peace. Combining that with your human awareness can be a powerful meditative practice. Why does this work?

Our minds are more powerful than our conscious thoughts alone. Try an experiment with someone willing to play along: Tell them to act tough. Maybe they'll flex their muscles and scowl. Then tell them to be Conan The Barbarian. The change will be more dramatic. Without needing to think about it much, their posture, expression and attitude will change.

This is the power of modeling. Our subconscious minds know more than our conscious minds. When you decide to be an animal for a moment, it influences you at a deep level. Pant like a dog and run around, and you'll feel quite different than you do now. Be a bear, sitting after he has eaten, and you'll feel more relaxed and content.

Watch a squirrel run around collecting nuts. He isn't worried. Of course he has fear at times, but he drops it when the cause is gone. He's just doing what needs to be done, right now, in this moment. He is at peace, even in all his busyness. Why not bring that state of mind into your practice, and learn how to meditate from the animals?

Know Your Bodybuilding Supplement LTaurine

Taurine is the second most abundant amino acid in the muscle after glutamine. It performs several useful functions and can act in a way similar to creatine in that it expands cells by helping the muscle to hold more water, thus increasing cell volume. The added benefit for bodybuilders is that these expanded muscle cells boost hydration and stimulate greater protein synthesis giving an enhanced muscle fullness.

The best time for bodybuilders to take taurine is thirty minutes before training and again immediately afterwards as this will heighten the effect of training. With any amino acid supplement overdosing can lead to weakness and nausea so care should be taken in applying small doses and increasing them gradually until an optimum level is reached. Bear in mind that many protein powders and other supplements are fortified with amino acids so check the labels carefully. The manufacturer's instructions should be followed in all instances.

Bad BreathWhite Lumps

In some instances of bad breath white lumps form in the very back of the throat on the tonsils. These are called tonsiloliths, or tonsil stones. Tonsil stones are little stones of accumulated refuse from the sinuses and throat: dead skin cells are always being shed, along with immune cells that patrol your respiratory passages for invading organisms and other foreign objects. You have a constant flow of mucous and saliva past your tonsils, which can be particularly pronounced if you suffer from post nasal drip, or irritated sinuses.

Little accumulations of all this dead material lodge in the tonsillar crypts and can become quite large and hard, often creating a sensation of something being stuck on the back of the throat. Many people notice that they have them, and wonder what they are. If they've noticed that they have bad breath white lumps become a prime suspect for the problem. Tonsiloliths may indeed play a role in halitosis.

Something else that is common in the back of the throat is oral bacteria. The oral cavity contains many different kinds of organisms, some of which have still not been identified. We do know, however, that anaerobic bacteria live on the back of the tongue, where they are protected from oxygen, and break down proteins, including dead skin cells and the other things that accumulate in tonsiloliths. It's no surprise, then, that these bacteria also proliferate in the tonsillar crypts and on tonsil stones when they are present. One more piece of information links bad breath white lumps and anaerobic bacteria.

Anaerobic bacteria smell famously bad - they produce the smell of feces, halitosis, and rotting organic material where there is little air circulation. They do this because they produce malodorous compounds, often called volatile sulfur compounds, when they break down protein molecules. If you know the smell of sulfur (rotten egg), you know how offensive these compounds can be. These compounds are being produced in the tonsiloliths that anaerobic bacteria are living on - bad breath white lumps and anaerobic bacteria are a team.

Tonsiloliths are hard to get rid of: though they eventually dislodge and are swallowed, these bad breath white lumps are sure to recur unless the tonsils are removed. This type of surgery is really not recommended any more, except in exceptional circumstances, so the best remedy is to gargle regularly with a good mouthwash that fights the anaerobes, and try to gently dislodge the larger tonsil stones , if you can.

Exercise Program

The exercise program you choose depends entirely on your fitness goals. The exercises you will be doing and the approach you take in performing these exercises will depend on whether you wish to gain muscle and strength, tone and lose weight or just stay in shape and be healthy. I will briefly describe a sample exercise program that can be adapted for all people regardless of their age or fitness objectives.

If you are looking to build muscle or strength via a bodybuilding routine, stick to 4-5 sets of 10-12 repetitions. Focus on the positive and negative of each movement of each repetition. Gradually increase the weight as you work out to force your muscles to work. Otherwise your muscles will become programmed, accustomed to the same weight and you will no longer experience any gains. There are many approaches and techniques that can be used in bodybuilding. Experiment and use the best one that fits you. An excellent book about weight training and bodybuilding that discusses many different techniques to working out is The Weider System of Bodybuilding.

If you are looking to tone or just stay in shape and be healthy, an exercise program combining weight training and a cardiovascular workout is appropriate for you. When you are exercising with weights, 3-4 sets of 12-15 repetitions at a reasonable weight would be appropriate. Combine this with cardio exercise 1-2 times a week such as riding an exercise bike or elliptical machine or by joining classes at your gym. It is difficult to discuss in great detail in this article exactly what you should be doing. For custom exercise programs I highly recommend Global, Health and Fitness

Here is a sample exercise program that can be modified to fit any person's fitness goals. Remember that you can change the order and incorporate different exercises for each body part on weekly basis. I encourage this to prevent boredom and your body getting used to the same routine.

Before beginning your workout, you should warm up for 5 - 10 minutes on an exercise bike or treadmill. This will prevent you from pulling muscles or injuring yourself. For a cool-down, you can perform stretching exercises.

Benefits of Massage Recliners vs. a Massage Therapist

After a long hard day at the office wouldn?t it be nice to get a massage. Unfortunately you have to first find a certified or licensed massage therapist. If you?re lucky and happen to know someone or have a regular therapist you work with, you still have to schedule an appointment. After you call and set the time you?ll have to get back into your car and drive to therapist?s office.

In today?s world most of us want instant gratification and have limited time in our hectic life. If money was no object most of us would get a massage every week, or possibly two or three times a week.

Let me pause here for a moment. It is very ironic that I would be writing an article about massage recliners because I am a certified massage therapist. As a therapist my first goal is to help the client get healthy. Sometimes I refer a client to a chiropractor or to an acupuncturist that can better serve the clients needs. The same is true about massage recliners. With new technology massage recliners have advanced beyond clunky massage rollers to high tech massagers that can emulate the human touch.

There are many health benefits from a massage from a trained therapist or a massage recliner. A trained massage therapist knows how to get the kinks out of your back and relieve the muscle tension from everyday stress. Massage recliners have superior technology and do more than rub your back. New models from Human Touch, iJoy, Panasonic and Sanyo can also massage the legs, feet, arms and shoulders.

Health Benefits of Massage

* Improves lymphatic flow. The act of massaging and kneading the muscles increases blood flow. Health benefits are better circulation and absorption of nutritional elements into the muscles and tissues. In addition, kneading the muscles helps clear out toxins out of the muscles.

* Decreases muscle tension and improves flexibility. Body tension and stress causes the muscles to tighten and shorten. Health benefits include loosening tight muscles and restoring range and flexibility.

* Massage therapy produces the ?feel good chemical?, the same endorphins that are increased after working out at the gym. This ?feel good chemical? helps speed recovery, reduces pain and reduces anxiety.

Another benefit seldom discussed is clearer thinking. When you are out of body pain and the range of motion is restored to your neck, your mind can better concentrate on your everyday tasks.

Rates for a massage therapist can range from $40 to $100 depending on the therapist?s level of training and the city they are located in. Massage recliners are not cheap and can cost thousands of dollars. But over time, a massage recliner can pay for itself and provide many health benefits. Other considerations of cost savings are other family members using the massage recliner. In addition, some massage recliners are very stylish and are a handsome addition to any home d?cor.

Another benefit of a massage recliner is the fact it is a recliner chair. Anybody who has ever sat in a recliner knows how comfortable it is. Even if you do not activate the features of the massage recliner, the recliner itself has health benefits. The simple act of just sitting in a comfortable chair relaxes your body and eases body tension.

It?s your choice. Buy a massage recliner or call a massage therapist. Either one that you choose will have many health benefits. To make your buying decision easy I?d suggest scheduling two or three appointments with a certified or licensed massage therapist. Then try several brands and models of massage recliners to compare results.

How To Tackle Acne Simple Yet Effective Guidelines!

The most common problem facing a majority of young people is acne. Acne is a skin disease that generally afflicts people in their 20s. However it is also seen in some people as old as 40. Many people tend to ignore the condition, as it is not a serious or a debilitating disease. However if the condition is not treated properly, it can lead to ugly and permanent scars on the face and other parts of the body.

The condition is caused by hormonal imbalance. Acne leads to closing of the pores and that leads to black and white pores. The condition if not treated can lead to permanent scars.

Acne is of two types, Inflammatory and noninflammatory. While the noninflammatory is generally mild, the inflammatory type of acne can be quite painful. The inflammatory glands turn into pimples and sometimes turn infectious. This condition if left untreated can lead to deep and permanent scars. The condition results in white and black pores on the face, neck back and the chest.

The first and the foremost measure to tackle acne are to follow good hygiene. Excessive intake of coffee, alcohol and a sedentary lifestyle are also the major causes for acne.

A strict regimen of good personal hygiene will bring in good results. And if this coupled with a balanced diet and proper lifestyle, the problem can be tackled most effectively.

However, for any remedy to bring in good result, it should be followed up regularly and repeatedly. Temporary measure will only bring in temporary relief. Therefore do not neglect acne when it is in a mild condition this can deteriorate and lead to a far severe chronic condition that may require expert care and treatment.

By following a proper diet and simple remedies, acne can be completely cured. You can follow any one of the following methods to treat acne.

Apply lemon juice on the affected area.
Apply mashed papaya on the affected areas.
Apply sandalwood paste.
Apply a pack of Multanimitti.
Wash the face with a sulfur based soap.

Along with the above treatment a healthy and balanced diet will go a long way in controlling acne. Drink at least one liter of water every day. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Exercise regularly and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

Use a face pack that suits you skin regularly and then wash your face thoroughly with plain water. Apply antiseptic lotion on the pores and clean them thoroughly. The most effective method for preventing acne however is by following good hygiene, taking a balanced diet, proper exercise and leading a tension free and active life.

Gum Disease Part II: Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I just clean my teeth?

Gum disease is a serious infection. Evidence now links gum disease to a variety of health concerns including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other degenerative diseases that are life threatening. It's not just about your teeth anymore! Gum disease can be a disfiguring disease. Your gums swell in size and become red. They may bleed very readily. Your teeth may shift and spaces between your teeth may start showing. The teeth then become loose and may need to be removed.

Early detection as with other diseases is the key to successful treatment. Your dentist or hygienist should routinely perform a gum (periodontal) disease screening exam once a year. The results of this examination will determine your periodontal status. If you have gum disease, your treatment will be personalized for you and your level of infection. A routine cleaning is not enough by itself to treat gum disease.

How can I prevent gum disease?

Prevention is the most important factor in the fight against gum disease. It is essential to keep your teeth and gums clean. Brush your teeth properly at least twice a day and floss at least once every 24 hours.

Routine and regular visits to your dentist are the best way of catching gum disease in its early stages before too much damage has been caused. Gum disease will not go away by itself or with improved home care. The only way of removing plaque deep under the gums is with professional cleanings. Once you have had a gum problem you will always be susceptible to recurring problems, so be sure to see your dentist on a regular basis - every three to four months unless he or she recommends otherwise.

How can I tell if I'm brushing and flossing properly?

Brushing - Brush your teeth gently, paying special attention to the areas where your teeth and gums meet. Clean every surface of every tooth. Use the tip of your brush to clean behind your upper and lower front teeth.

Flossing - Take a piece of floss and wrap it around your middle fingers. Using a clean section of floss each time, wrap the floss into a C shape around a tooth. Wipe it over the tooth, from base to tip, a couple of times. Repeat on each tooth.

What if I am already in the early stages of gum disease?

If you have gum disease, getting rid of plaque and tartar gives your gums a chance to get better. That's why in the early stages of gum disease, the best treatment is:

* cleaning by your dentist or dental hygienist to remove built-up tartar

* brushing twice a day to remove plaque and

* flossing once a day to remove plaque.

When gum disease is more serious, your dentist may refer you to a dental specialist called a periodontist. A periodontist has extra training in treating gum disease and in restoring (or regenerating) bone and gum tissue that have been lost because of gum disease.

A periodontist also treats serious forms of gum disease that do not get better with normal dental care. When serious gum disease is found, brushing and flossing become even more important.

What is Root Planing?

Normal tooth cleanings remove plaque and calculus deposits from above the gum line. Root planing is necessary when these deposits extend below the gum line.

Root planing is performed with the same tools as normal cleanings but the procedure is more aggressive. Often it is necessary to numb the affected area before the procedure. Once the accumulated plaque and calculus have been removed, the gums will heal, tightening around the teeth.

Depending upon the extent of disease found in the examination, root planing may be done over several practice visits. In this way, your dentist can assess the progress of treatment and alter tactics if necessary.

Simply stated, root planing may be considered as an extension of a routine cleaning. A routine cleaning is intended to clean harden deposits that form above the gums. Over time, these deposits often form below the gums, on the roots. It is at this point that we recommend root planing. What does it accomplish?

During this procedure the root surfaces are literally planed.

This accomplishes several things:

* removes hard deposits and the bacteria they harbor

* creates a smooth root surface that is easier to keep clean

* reduces infection because the bacteria will not reattach to the smooth surface as readily

How quickly will I heal?

Periodontal therapy represents a partnership between you and your periodontal team. If we each do our part, you will achieve the maximum benefit from this procedure. Your results will be affected by:

* how effective you perform your home care

* diet

* smoking

* stress

It is unrealistic to consider your therapy as a quick fix. Each person will respond differently to treatment. Future treatment recommendations will be made on the basis of your healing. For healing to be maximized it is imperative that you participate in your home care everyday.

What is a frenectomy?

A frenectomy is the surgical removal of a frenum in the mouth. A frenum is a fold of tissue that passes from the movable lip or cheek to the gum. When a frenum is positioned in such a way as to interfere with the normal alignment of teeth or results in pulling away of the gum from the tooth surface causing recession, these are often removed using a surgical process known as a frenectomy.

Risk of Eating Unhealthy

As a teen, most of us do not even care if we are eating right, or begin to understand the implications of poor eating habits. As we age, however, we do begin to notice the effects of improper exercise, poor eating habits, and how they affect our health. Today, as the baby boomers begin their retirement years, health concerns and questions are on the rise. These aging boomers are more concerned than any previous generations about their good health, their ability to keep their good health, and how their diet affects their health.

You do not have to be a doctor to understand the relationship between too much consumption of food and health disorders. You simply have to look around at a nation approaching an obesity epidemic to understand what happens when you over consume in general. One a smaller scale we wonder about the over consumption of just certain kinds of foods? What happens when you overdo in the sweet department?

There are all kinds of health issues related to over consumption of sugar. Diabetes would be the number one health concern. But, diabetes is not the only ill effect from over consumption of sugar. Obesity, thyroid dysfunction, kidney malfunction, and intestinal problems can all be directly associated with too much sugar consumption.

What about too much alcohol? The ravaging effects of alcoholism are a continual struggle and medical expense to many companies and citizens in this country, and indeed the whole world. Lost youth, liver problems, brain deterioration, the speeding of other age-related diseases are all side affects of too much alcohol consumption.

Then, we can talk about the effects of too little food consumption. What happens when we do not consume what we need to maintain our health? Gum diseases, heart disease, muscle deterioration, vision loss, and anorexia occur when we do not get the necessary food our body needs.

Even when we can?t consume enough actual food, we can supplement the vitamins and minerals our bodies need in order to maintain some healthy functioning. You have only to walk down the aisle at your local supermarket to discover that there has been a vitamin revolution. Every possible vitamin and mineral needed by the body is available in capsule, pill, tablet, or powder form.

Once your body has reached the point of unhealthy functioning, or you have placed such a strain on your body from over consumption that one of the related diseases has taken hold, it?s almost impossible to correct one problem without creating another. Once you have become a diabetic, there are so many complications, that simply choosing to diet and exercise is no longer an option. The health concerns you now have far outweigh the easy solution of diet and exercise. Can you begin to see how important maintaining your health is to your quality of life? How important it is to the quality of your spouses? and children?s? lives? Your choices directly affect situations with their lives. You should make every effort to keep your health; don?t you owe it to your family, if not yourself?

A lot of people eat foods that are generally deficient in the vitamins and minerals. Visit Nutritional Supplements Center to learn why it is vital that you take nutritional health supplements. You will also discover best nutritional supplements.

Are You Taking a Holiday from Your SelfCare?

I hear a lot of people commenting that they wish they hadn't indulged so much on their holiday or that they need a vacation after their vacation.

It's essential to your self-care and wellness that you DO take holidays, have a break from your regular routine and recharge your batteries. But this kind of unstructured time ? whether it's one Sunday or a three-week holiday - presents unique challenges to your self-care.

Here are some clues that you might be taking a holiday from your self-care when you have time off.

1. Clutter and mess are starting to take over, but you tell yourself you're on holiday so you shouldn't have to clean up or worry about it. You don't know what day it is and things are piling up, undone.

2. You're worried about the work that's waiting for you when you return.

3. Getting where you're going on time ? either around the corner or around the world ? is stressing you out.

4. Your body is showing the effects of extra indulgence or lack of sleep ? fatigue, weight gain, indigestion and back and neck pain.

5. You have no energy and/or you're feeling lazy.

6. You're arguing more with your loved ones and you're easily irritated by things they say and do.

Adding in some structure to otherwise unstructured time can keep you feeling good about yourself and your choices all through your holidays, and can keep you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated long after you return to your regular routine.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Keep your sleep on track. When we don't have to get up in the morning to rush off to work or our other responsibilities, it's tempting to oversleep or to fall into the pattern of staying up late and rising late. While it's certainly a great idea to catch up on sleep during your time off, experts agree that having a regular bedtime and waking time keeps us at our best. So if you've been exploring the night life during your time off, give yourself at least a few days at the end of your holiday to get back to your regular bedtime and waking routine. This way your body won?t get a shock when it?s time to go back to work.

2. Keep your meal times regular and your meals healthy. It's tempting to let go of any planning or structure during time off, and this includes meals. Grabbing whatever's there, whenever you think of it, can lead to poor food choices that don't give you the nutrition you need to keep you going strong for all the fun you've planned.

3. Have at least one activity planned every day. The key word here is planned ? plans can, and should, be changed ? this is YOUR free time, after all! Having something planned helps to keep you moving around and active and keeps you from slipping into lethargy.

4. Take some time alone. After all, as much as you love your family, you're not used to spending 24 hours a day with them. Spending some time apart, nourishing your own self-care, will help you to appreciate each other more when you're together.

5. A change is as good as a rest. This well-worn expression has lots of truth to it. Having time off doesn't necessarily mean a complete absence of activity. Instead, it can be a rich schedule of activities that are things you don't usually get to do. This could include self-care rituals such as an aromatherapy treatment, time in the garden, experimenting with a new, colourful vegetable in the kitchen or visiting a friend.

And above all, adjust your expectations ? of yourself, of your loved ones and of your holiday plans. As this article has discussed, sometimes a holiday is NOT the rejuvenating panacea you might have hoped for.

While I hope these tips will help you to improve your experience during your time off, try to let go of the pressure to pack in as much fun and/or relaxation as you can.

Instead, enjoy each moment as it comes and focus on the next healthy choice you can make.

The Effects of Retin A for Acne Treatment

Much recent evidence points to the beneficial effects of Retin A in treating more serious cases of acne, as well as aged, sun-damaged skin and stretch marks. However, as with most prescription medications, there are potential adverse reactions that you should be aware of before you begin treatment.

Retin A, or tretinoin, is a derivative of vitamin A and is available in a variety of forms. Retin A cream is weaker than the gel as the medication is less able to penetrate the skin in cream form. It acts to unplug acne follicles and bring the pimple to the surface, as well as prevent new pimple formation.

Since one of the effects of Retin A cream applications is to extrude the pimple, it initially appears as if it is making the situation worse. As such dermatologists recommend that you give it time to work, sometimes up to a year or more for maximum Retin A results.

Although minor side effects of Retin A are quite common, they are usually mild and will subside within six to eight weeks. They may include unusual darkening of the skin, slight discoloration or redness. Slight peeling of the skin has also been reported in many cases as has swelling. You should avoid direct sunlight in the early stages of using Retin A, as it will dramatically increase your chances of sunburn.

Don't let the adverse effects of Retin A discourage you from discussing this treatment regimen with your dermatologist; for serious cases, this can be the only remedy that works for you. Retin A results speak to the efficacy of this medication in getting severe acne breakouts under control.

If you have blemished skin you might want to try natural treatment options before you look into potent prescription applications. There are natural formulas with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can be as effective as a Retin A cream or gel.

There are many other treatment options for acne, from benzoyl peroxide OTC medications such as Clearasil, Oxy and Proactiv to oral drugs like Accutane and you should certainly check with a dermatologist to find out which is right for you. Retin A results are quite favorable as are those for some natural solutions, it's just a matter of figuring out which is right for you.

David Bloom is an avid health enthusiast and a regular contributor to a variety of health websites. He is the author of Natural Acne Treatments and Effects of Retin A, a blog dedicated to the treatment of acne, covering conventional and natural remedies for clearing up blemished skin.

Moldy Tomato: "Made from Ripe Tomato"

The Splenda package boldly states Made from Sugar. So, yes, it certainly is made from sugar.

But what exactly does that mean?

According to McNeil Nutritionals (Producers of Splenda), Made from Sugar means three chlorine molecules added to a sucrose (sugar) molecule. This mixture causes a chemical reaction, then BLAM!--Splenda.

What I'm concerned about is that during the chemical reaction, the original sucrose molecule is grossly altered. It's no longer sugar. Even though there initially was sugar in this equation, the sucrose no longer holds the same molecular qualities.

McNeil Nutritionals, though, couldn't afford to tell the public that... so they called the product Sucralose. Which is a reminder that the sugar was once there.

What's scary is that on the same token, they could have called Chlorinose--named after the OTHER chemical used in the production of the product. But I'm afraid that would not have helped sales.

I like to look at this type of marketing wizardly like this... The formula is simple:

1. Find a derivative of something natural.
2. Alter the heck out of it.
3. Change its name so it is not as ominous as it truly is.

Can you think of other examples? Sweet'N Low? Equal? MSG?

Similar to the creation of Splenda, a moldy tomato is derived from a previously ripe one... all that happens is a few chemical reactions and some bacteria take over. Would you eat a moldy tomato if it had a sticker on it that said Made from a Ripe Tomato!?! Would you eat it even if they called it something fancy like Tomato du Fuz or labeled them with the year it began to rot like a fine wine? Of course not.

We can even analyze it the opposite way--where something occurring naturally is made from chemicals that are bad for us. Would you eat table salt if it had a label on it that said Made from Chlorine. Probably not.

It's all about marketing the product.

They doesn't sell moldy tomatoes because they know nobody will eat them. And they couldn't sell Splenda if they said Made from Chlorine... which in fact it is, because there are 3 chlorine molecules to every one sucrose molecule.

We are at a disadvantage because we cannot see the effects of the chemical reactions these molecules go through. We don't bring microscopes to our diners to examine our packaged sweeteners to see what is really there... and even if we did, we'd have no idea what they've created for us to ingest.

We can see the effects of mold on a tomato. We know it is bad.

So here are some of documented effects and facts about Splenda. After you read them, hopefully you'll know it is bad as well.

1. As of 2005, There have only been six human trials to date on Splenda. Not nearly enough to form a useful scientific opinion.

2. The longest trial lasted three months.

3. At LEAST 15% of Splenda is not excreted from your body in a timely manner.

4. Chlorine, though rarely occurring naturally, can create dangerous byproducts called dioxins (and other organochlorine compounds). These are hazardous to our bodies. Even if we are exposed to very low levels, dioxins remain in the body and accumulate. The EPA is now saying that this is soon to become a major health risk problem. The cumulative effects of dioxin in humans have been linked to birth defects, cancer, reproductive disorders and immune system breakdown.

Here are some more detailed medical effects:

1. Shrunken thymus (immune system) glands (up to 40 percent shrinkage)
2. Enlarged liver and kidneys.
3. Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus.
4. Increased cecal weight.
5. Reduced growth rate.
6. Decreased red blood cell count.
7. Hyperplasia of the pelvis.
8. Extension of the pregnancy period.
9. Aborted pregnancy.
10. Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights.
11. Diarrhea.

You might say these are extreme cases. That's OK to think... but who knows?!!? There have only been SIX human trials.

I know of a chemical that has these particular side effects in very low doses... headache, drowsiness, vertigo, weak and rapid pulse, deep and rapid breathing, a bright-red color in the face, nausea and vomiting.

Sounds like the regular over the counter sinus medication, nothing harmless, right?

Wrong... it's cyanide and it's derived from nature as well.

Could your sweetener be bad for you? You bet.

Muscle Cramps & Jelly Beans ? When a Sugar Isn't a Sugar

It?s amazing how many very good athletes don?t consider pre-race nutrition as one of their strategies for winning or at least doing well, injury-free, in an event.

I was speaking to a runner on a few days ago before a race and his strategy was to load up on jelly beans 20 minutes before lining up for a half marathon . . . unfortunately I needed more than 20 minutes to prove to him why this wasn?t a good idea.

Fatigue is certainly an important factor to consider if you suffer exercise induced muscle cramps. The primary source of fuel for the muscle is from carbohydrates and one of the most basic forms of carbohydrate are sugars.

However, when we say ?sugars? ? people think of sugarcane sugar like in a candy bar or jelly beans. But the truth is that there are certain building sugars for your body and you?ve got to learn to differentiate those.

There?s a family of sugars called monosaccharides, polysaccharides and oligosaccharides and these are the building sugars that you want ? not sugarcane sugar, or fructose, or sucralose or syrup or any of those types of things.

A good source of carbohydrate from fruit, in particular, is important to provide muscles with important natural sugars ? monosaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides - that assist with the storage and supply of glucose for the muscles.

And these monosaccharides and polysaccharides help you recover and repair your muscle faster after major exercise or an event. Your muscle basically works like an engine that needs good quality gasoline to perform well and those saccharides are like the gasoline for your muscles.

So it?s very important to have those saccharides and the carbohydrates and electrolytes in those muscle areas so that you can perform more efficiently and prevent cramping.

It?s also so very important to have a carbohydrate meal with saccharides within 30 minutes after your performance. We?ve consistently found athletes that do that ? even if it?s just eating some fresh fruit within the 30 minutes ? recover faster than athletes that don?t do it.

To start any nutritional program the first place to start is to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Most people do not take in the recommended intake of 9 to 12 servings of fruit and vegetables per day and for athletes and people who train regularly this means 12 servings.

A serving is equivalent to a small banana, a medium sized apple, 1 cup of raw salad greens (about the size of your hand), ? cup of fruit or vegetable juice (6 oz), ? cup cooked vegetables around the size of your fist or a baseball and ? cup dried fruit.

Just meeting the daily recommendations for fruit and vegetable intake will go a long way towards better health . . . and that extends into physical performance and reducing your overall risk of cramping.

Cardio EZ One Of The Leading Products For Cardiovascular System Function

Cardio E-Z

Cardio E?Z is an oral chelation product developed for the cardiovascular system function. In 1997 Dr. Donsbach developed Cardio E-Z after comprehensive testing at Santa Monica Hospital on hundreds of patients. It contains EDTA, CoQ-10, and a combination of nutrients that make it, according to Dr. Donsbach, the best product for cardiovascular system function. Some of the important nutrients and their benefits to the human body present in Cardio E?Z are discussed below.

Vitamin C

Cardio E?Z contains 400 mg of Vitamin C per serving. Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble substance that is responsible for several important functions in the body. It is an important antioxidant that blocks some of the damage caused by free radicals that are a byproduct of converting food to energy. It is also important in the healing of wounds and production of skin, tendons, blood vessels, etc.

The build up of hazardous byproducts in the body causes aging and produces various health problems such as heart disease and cancer. Cardio E-Z contains the necessary amounts of Vitamin C that help to reduce the chances of heart disease.

Vitamin E

Cardio E?Z contains 300 IU of vitamin E per serving. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble substance that is commonly found in eight forms. Each form performs different activities that are vital to the body. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects your body from free radicals. Free radicals are the main culprits of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin E in Cardio E?Z reduces the chance of cardiovascular disease and plays a role in immune function.

Niacin

Cardio E?Z contains 50 mg niacin per serving. Niacin is also known as Vitamin B3. Small amounts are also manufactured in the body. It helps in the release of energy and metabolism, cell respiration, functioning of the nervous system and normal secretion of stomach fluids. A deficiency of niacin causes dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia. Required amounts of niacin for healthy bodily functions are present in Cardio E?Z.

Vitamin B6

Cardio E?Z contains 50 mg of Vitamin B6 per serving. B6 serves an important function in the metabolism of protein. Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble substance that is commonly found in three forms. Cardio E-Z contains the necessary amounts of vitamin B6 for proper functioning of nervous and immune systems.

Calcium

Cardio E?Z contains 100 mg of calcium per serving. Calcium plays an important part in the human body by keeping the bones strong and supporting the proper function of muscles and nerves. Cardio E?Z helps to maintain proper functioning of the human body by providing additional amounts of calcium.

Magnesium

Cardio E?Z contains 200 mg of magnesium per serving. Magnesium is required for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Cardio E?Z uses this element to keep heart rhythm steady along with other vital functions.

CoQ10

Cardio E?Z contains 15 mg of CoQ10 per serving. CoQ10 is also known as ubiquinone or Coenzyme Q10. It is found naturally in the body in small amounts. It is an anti-oxidant that is used for release in cells. Coenzyme Q10 helps with congestive heart failure when taken orally. This is one of the more important nutrients in Cardio E?Z.

Ginkgo

Cardio E?Z contains 15mg of Ginkgo per serving. It is basically used for its powerful effect on the circulatory system. It increases oxygen levels in the brain and blood circulation. Cardio E?Z uses Ginkgo to prevent clumping in arteries.

Suffering From Panic Attacks? Does Your Family Suffer Too? It Could Be Hereditary

There are many people who are ashamed of the fact that they suffer panic attacks or anxiety attacks. For this reason they hide away the fact that they suffer these attacks from others, often from their own family. This is a pity as many people find that when they start to talk about their anxiety attacks with members of their immediate family they find that their panic attacks are not just confined to themselves.

Often it seems that anxiety disorders and panic attacks can run in the family, in other words it seems that they can be genetic. It is not unusual for a person seeking help from these attacks to find that their own parent suffers from a very similar condition.

And when someone in the family becomes aware that a family member suffers from some form of anxiety attack or disorder and is having treatment for it they often come forward themselves, despite the fact that no one in the family realised that this was the case.

It is very difficult to study these things as there is usually a stigma associated with panic or anxiety attacks, and they are often not talked about.

It can often be the case that anxiety disorders are inherent in your family and you are not aware of it in either your family or yourself. This may be because you have not experienced an attack yourself. This does not however, mean that you won?t. Panic attacks can be brought on unexpectedly by stressful events such as the death of a loved one, severe financial stress like loss of a job, or the burden of sever debt.

Unexpected traumas can bring on panic and anxiety disorders. Traumas such as a car accident, being the victim of a crime, or a major life threatening illness.

It is even possible to find one the victim of unexpected anxiety disorders from happy but stressful events such as getting married, starting a new job or having a family.

For many, when looking back, it is possible to pinpoint a major life event or life stress which started the panic attacks or anxiety attacks when there were none present before that event.

And for others it can be a long slow build up of stress over a longer time that can cause the onset of anxiety problems.

So there can be a wide range of causes of anxiety and panic problems. They can be hereditary, but not necessarily. They can be experienced form an early age thoughout life, or can suddenly come on from an unexpected life stressor. Alternatively they can result from the slow buildup of life stresses to the point where something seems to break and the anxiety seems to manifest itself.

And these are just some of the causes.

But the good news is that although anxiety and panic attacks can be extremely frightening and intimidating, they are often quite susceptible to treatment. There is no need to suffer in silence.

Beautiful Skin 101

Most women shy away from being called 'too sensitive.' But when the subject is kin, they're all too willing to wear the scarlet S. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, at least 40% of women believe they have sensitive skin, although most dermatologists report that only a fraction really do. Sensitivity defined as skin that's prone to irritation from products, weather, or stress is a real (albeit misunderstood) condition. It's not the same as an allergy. It means you have a lower tolerance for irritating ingredients, such as fragrances and dyes. The evil twist here is that the more skin reacts, the more sensitive it becomes. Imagine normal skin having a natural barrier like Saran Wrap. People with sensitive skin have a disrupted barrier all the time. But by identifying what disrupts that barrier and protecting it with the right moisturizer, you can develop a thicker skin.

Read Labels: Before applying creams, lotions, or makeup, read the ingredients list. The fewer ingredients on the label, the better. All products and formulas should be free of fragrance, dye, and isopropyl alcohol (commonly known as rubbing alcohol). And beware of botanical ingredients and oils. Test each new product on the side of your neck for a few days before using it on your face.

Cleanse: Wash you face with a milky, non-foaming liquid cleanser or a soap-free bar. Do not use a washcloth or any rough scrubber, which can be too abrasive for sensitive skin. Rinse face well by splashing with lukewarm water and pat with a soft towel, leaving skin slightly damp. There is no need to use a toner, which generally contains drying and irritating isopropyl alcohol.

Moisturize: Dab moisturizer onto damp skin in the morning and night. Look for one that contains ceramides, fatty acids, or cholesterol, all of which help form a protective barrier against irritation. In the morning, when the moisturizer is absorbed, apply a sunscreen (with an SPF 15 or higher). It should also contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are least likely to cause reactions. Cheat Sheet

Choose the right products. 'Allergy-tested' means it doesn't have ingredients that cause common reactions. 'Noncomedogenic' means it won't clog pores.

Read labels. Not everyone with sensitive skin is troubled by the same thing, but the most common irritants, in order, include fragrance, isopropyl alcohol, dyes, PABA, lanolin, sorbic acid, formaldehyde, and benzoic acid. Don't assume that natural products are safe. Some botanicals (rosemary, sandalwood, arnica) and essential oils (jojoba, tea tree, lavender) may irritate.

Test samples on the neck for several days. If they don't irritate you, they'll probably be fine for your face. Don't try an arsenal of new products at once. Similarly, if skin breaks out, stop using everything, and reintroduce products one by one.

Be as gentle as possible. Use a creamy, liquid cleanser or a soap-free bar and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid Buf-Pufs and washcloths. Pat with a towel and leave skin slightly damp.

Moisturize with a product for sensitive skin, or one that contains fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides. Every day, be sure to apply a PABA-free sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Daily Basics

Wash with a milky, non-foaming liquid.
Use a soap-free formula with oatmeal that calms dry and itchy skin.
For day, use a fragrance-free moisturizer containing a non-irritating sunscreen. At night, smooth on a noncomedogenic formula that helps fortify the skin's barrier while you sleep.
Dermatologists say that sensitive-skin sufferers are more likely to avoid using sunscreens, associating them with past reactions to PABA. Choose one that won't aggravate skin.
It's not just what you put on your face. Hair spray can cause breakouts along the hairline. Use an allergy-tested and keep the hair off the face whenever possible.

Extra Help

To soothe redness, dermatologists recommend using a fragrance-free treatment. A dime-size dab of an over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream also relieves itching.
For dryness on the body, increase resistance to the environment with a product containing lipids, which is safe for sensitive types.
To treat blemishes, start with an irritant-free face lotion that minimizes blotches with vitamin A. Follow with a concealer that won't aggravate acne, which does double duty by helping clear and conceal blemishes.
Dermatologists like products that get their color from iron oxides, which are less likely to cause reactions. They're also talc-free, which means they won't rob skin of the moisture it needs.

Tricks of the Trade

Don't' shower or bathe for more than 20 minutes, or you'll dry out your skin. Use lukewarm water.
Don't start any aggressive treatments during the winter, when skin is dryer and more sensitive because of low humidity and indoor heating. A humidifier helps skin from becoming parched.
Grainy or chemical exfoliants can cause breakouts. Excessive daily scrubbing rubs the sebaceous glands, which can clog pores. Use a clay or mud mask to slough off dead cells instead.
Facials are trouble unless they're simple, steam-free, and employ fragrance-free products.
Avoid chemical peels and laser treatments if you're sensitive to exfoliants and skin-lightening creams.
If acne medications irritate your skin, ask your doctor about taking oral antibiotics or birth-control pills, which can help minimize blemishes.
Keep Retin-A treatments to only once a week. Dilute the strength by mixing it with your moisturizer.
For skin that seems provoked by anything and everything, ask you dermatologist about cleansers and moisturizers that are normally prescribed for hypersensitive postsurgery and postpeel patients.
